Needle Felted Gnomes!  Next Class Begins July 17th, 2010

In this class you will learn how to make a wonderful momma or poppa gnome with a pointed hat and colorful clothing.  Your gnome will be made entirely by needle felting wool fibers into the shape of this  character.  You will learn the proper use of felting needles and how to turn this soft fluffy wool fleece into a nice firm little woman or man.

Supplies:

  • FELTING NEEDLES: #36 Triangular, #38 Triangular, #40 Triangular. You need at least two of each. I color code my felting needles with acrylic paint in order to distinguish the different size needles that I will be using.
  • Optional: Clover Needle Felting Tool - green in color, includes five #40 felting needles. This is good for surface needle felting the gnome’s face and smoothing out the clothes fiber.
  • Clover Pen Style Needle Felting Tool (pink in color with three #40 felting needles) – good for needle felting the core fiber and body fiber.
  • Clover Needle Felting Mat – either large or small - use for needle felting the hand, band for the hat and more.
  • Clover Needle Felting Claw & Mat Cleaner
  • Colonial Needle Felting Tool- Two kinds- one holds up to 6 needles and the other holds up to 12 needles.
  • Colonial Fiber Blenders: These are needle felting hand cards.

These last six items are great to have if you will be continuing with needle felting, but are totally optional. If I would choose one it would be the Clover Pen Style Needle Felting tool.

  • FOAM FELTING PAD: At least 2” x 12” x 12”. This is used as a pad upon which you will do your needle felting.
  • CORE WOOL: 4 ½ to 5 ounces depending on how tall and wide you make the cone shape which is the basic armature for the gnome’s body. This core wool is from the Down breed of sheep which is called a meat breed. The crimp of its fleece is springy and crisp.

  • ROMNEY FLEECE IN BATT FORM: Clothes- 3 colors: Jacket/Dress - 1.4 ounces, Pants- .10 ounces, Hat .10 ounces; Face and Hands- flesh color- 1.2 ounces, Belt- .4 ounces, Shoes-.6 ounces; Inner mouth and Eyelid lines- dark brown- .1 ounces and Beard- .2 ounces. These amounts are only approximate depending on the size of your gnome. My gnome was 17” tall.
  • MERINO - CROSS FLEECE IN BATT FORM: Facial features – Eyes- brown, green or blue, white, black. Lips – Just a tiny amount is needed.
  • WOODEN SKEWER: Used for rolling your fleece for the chin, lips,
eyelids, thumb. You can buy these in most supermarkets.
  • SCISSOR: Used for cutting the upper lip and fingers.
  • ARM ARMATURE: (1)Two 18” – 22 gauge cloth stem floral wires or anything similar or two 6mm x 12” white chenille stem pipe cleaners.
  • ROLL OF WHITE FLORAL TAPE: For the arm armature.
  • ROUGE: To put on your gnome’s cheeks.
  • SEWING NEEDLE or DOLL NEEDLE: To lift up surface of cheek or adjust nose.
