California Rag Doll & her Bonus Needle Felted Teddy!

Join Maurine Adrezin as she teaches you to create this unique doll in her California Rag doll workshop.  This workshop is suitable for all skill levels in doll and bear making.
In this class you will learn how to make a beautiful cloth art doll and needle felt her friend, the bear. You will learn how to weave an unusual skirt for your doll, how to needle sculpt and color in her face, stuff her body, make articulated fingers, needle felt her hair, put her all together and much more. In weaving, “California Rag” is a technique for cutting strips of fabric a certain way and weaving them on a loom.

Supplies & Tools for the Doll:

  • Roll of freezer paper or Freezer Paper Sheets by C. Jenkins for templates.
  • 2 yards of a nice print good quality closely woven 100% cotton fabric –
    skirt, arms, bodice – wash and dry before cutting.
    • ½ yard of a contrasting fabric for the legs, arm cuffs and belt.
    • ½ yard of Craft Velour- flesh color from http://joggles.com for face and hands. – (Does not have to be washed).
  • Hemostats – 3 ½” or 5” and a 7” for turning the legs, arms, fingers.
  • Turning Tubes- For turning tiny fingers- ie- 1/16” solid brass rod goes into a
    1/8” round brass tube – hobby store.  (To stand doll on a wooden base-ie, Put a 3/16” round brass tube into each leg and put two 1/8” solid brass rods into the wooden stand. Not necessary if you want the doll to stand by itself.)
  • 12” by ¼” wooden dowel for body and two 6” x ¼” wooden dowels for
    legs if not using the brass rods and tubes in legs.
  • Screwdriver – with a 1/8” to ¼” tip to aid in stuffing doll parts.
  • Sewing machine – open toe foot and a ¼” foot.
  • Needles for sewing machine – Schmetz stretch needle 75/11 for sewing Craft Velour and a Schmetz universal needle 80/12 or 90/14 for
    sewing cotton fabric.
  • Needles for sewing – John James Curved Quilting Needle, John James
    Long Darner #7, Piecemakers Doll Making Needles - sizes 5 1/8” and a
    7”. These are my favorites.
  • Rotary cutter with a new blade in it, Quilting mat at least 12” x 18” with
    1” grids on it, Quilter’s 6” x 24”ruler for cutting fabric strips.
  • Large and small sharp scissors – for fabric and for paper.
  • Harrisville Peg Loom http://harrisville.com   Look under- Educational
    Toys.
  • A 6” plastic needle for weaving also from Harrisville.
    Warp (threads that go vertically on a loom) to blend in with your fabric,
    ie 8/4 carpet warp (Any weaving store or http://halyconyarn.com   )
    or any strong pearl cotton thread that will not break easily.
  • Thread – Machine sewing thread to match the Craft Velour for head and
    hands, your print fabric and your contrasting fabric. Upholstery or
    button or carpet thread to match your machine sewing threads for
    attaching arms and legs to the body.
  • Colored Pencils, i.e. Prismacolor to color in the iris of the eyes – 3 shades
    of same color.
  • Acrylic Paint, ie by Folkart or Ceramcoat (craft stores) for the eyes and
    lips – white, black, and lip color – red, pink, or orange.
  • Small Paint brush, pallet and plastic cup or bowl.
  • Curly mohair, fleece or whatever you like for needle felting the hair.
  • Package of white 6mm x 12”pipe cleaners.
  • Bag of Fairfield Polyfil polyester, Airtex Premium or any stuffing you like,
    20 ounce size.
  • Rouge to color in your doll’s cheeks.
  • Black or brown micron Pigma pen - .005 or.05 or anything similar.
  • Tacky glue or anything similar to glue on eyelids and eyelashes on doll.
  • Quilter’s straight pins.
  • Few white stick on labels.
  • Chalk pencil to contrast with face fabric to outline eyes and mouth.
  • Toothpicks.
  • Fine Sharpie pen.
  • Iron & Ironing board.
  •  Pencil or colored pencil used to draw line on fabric before cutting for
    skirt.
  • Plastic or regular fork used to press down your weaving.
     

Supplies for the Bear

  • Romney wool in batt form from http://edinburghimports.com – in a color of your choice – 1 ounce.
  • Also a drop of black for nose and mouth, and light brown around eyes and inner ears.
  • Felting needles - #40 felting needles, Clover Pen Style Needle Felting Tool Pink, Clover Felting Needle Tool – green – are optional.
  • High density flat pillow foam, for example 2” deep x 15” x 17” to work on. Mine was made by Airtex but use any other brand if it works for you.
  • 4mm round black beads with a hole for eyes. The size depends on the size of your bear. This is for a very small bear.
  • Wooden skewer for bear’s eyelids – optional. Black embroidery floss – for toes and fingers
  • Upholstery or carpet thread to join the body parts together.
